Bobby Henderson's e-mail to the Kansas School Board is written in a form we'll explore in Unit 4: It identifies a problem and proposes a solution. It drew attention to the School Board's assault on evolution and helped generate widespread derision. The board members eventually were voted out of office.
A visit to Henderson's Web site is eye-opening. Years after he wrote the e-mail, he still gets hate mail.
After reading "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster" (Presence, pg. 348), tell us about a particularly effective bit of satire that you've read, heard, or seen (on television perhaps). What made it effective?
This response is due on Monday, Nov. 1.
In bobby hendersons writing he is in a way mocking the theory of creation by infering that their is a "creator" and it oddly resembles a flying spaghetti thing... 1 piece of satire i thought was funny was actually a project i worked on last year in a group in my english class where we were assigned to mock the status quo (probly spelled wrong) of teenagers in high school and how every1 in the school could be divided up into 6 or so catagories: Jocks,Geeks,Stoners,Rednecks,Emo, and Theater people(me)... at the end of the project we gave reasons why all these people fit the description and did fit into a catagory, this was surprisingly effective because it was true, but something people rarely thought about, and that it hit close to home...

I think that a piece of satire that I have encountered is when you get your cartoon drawn by those artist that enhance your most obvious features(I forgot what they are called.) When they draw those, they are supposed to be funny and a joke because they aren't actually real, but it's funny because they do draw attention to those features that help you identify the person it's of. Even though it's not an accurate picture of someone, it's very easy to tell who the person is. The artist makes satire out of your certain looks that stand out.

I found that the show south park is a good example of satire. The show basically depicts children growing up and learning that the real world is just as cruel as middle school. South Park basically does a parody on every major news story that hits the general public. South Park tends to mock whatever is going on through outrageous moments. The way they draw up the show is funny and half of the stuff that goes on is unreal. South Park targets a range of real world events, celebrities and whatever they can get a hold of to draw up a parody filled world.

A good example of satire is the "Weekend Update" skit on Saturday Night Live. Each weekend, they make fun of some serious issues in a joking way. An example is when they make fun of the oil spill. This is effective, because it degrades the person or government the show is referring to by making fun of what is going on.
ReplyDeleteThere is a movie called Religulous by Bill Maher that talks about religion and how unnecessary it is and how the world would be a better place without it. At one point in the movie he gets into a conversation with a shop owner about how believing in god is ridiculous. Bill Maher: If Santa Claus can hit every house in the world. Steve Berg: No, we don't believe in Santa Claus. Bill Maher: Of course not, that's one man flying all around the world and dropping presents down a chimney. One man hearing everybody murmur at him at the same time, that I get.
ReplyDeleteThe flying spaghetti monster is one of the most interesting satire poking fun at creation and religion. Most people find this kind of offensive and rediculous. A writing simular to this incident is a novel titled "Hard Times," by Charles Dickens. This stories main idea is how cruel the governor is and poke fun at the system of goverment, which can also be offensive.
ReplyDeleteI Agree that South park is a great example of this. they are well known for being " equal opportunity Offenders" meaning they offend absolutely everyone. Another great show that had a lot of satire is Furturama (sp?). Both shows tend to be really funny and are all geared towards they college dynamic.
