Learn Statistics. Go Abroad.

Read K. Anthony Appiah's piece in Presence: "Learn Statistics. Go Abroad." Tell us in 200 words where you would wish to study if you could spend a semester abroad. What attracts you about that place?

  1. If I could study abroad, I would choose to go to Italy. I have always wanted to visit Italy because I have had friends go there and say it’s beautiful. Italy is so big and there are so many opportunities when you go somewhere new. There are so many historical sites that I would like to see and experience. I think that going to another country would make me realize how much there is in the world and how other people live. I also think that it would be cool to learn how to speak Italian. Going to Italy would help to do that. Experiencing their culture would help me learn the language and I would learn a lot of new things. If I went to Italy I would meet a lot of new people that could have huge impacts on my life and influence the way that I live. I would love to experience a new country and culture. I would come out of studying abroad with new experiences and new friends. This would be really important to me and I would appreciate every minute of going to another country. There are many other countries that I would like to go to but Italy is the first.

  2. If I could study a semester abroad, I would either choose Germany or Italy. Both of those countries fascinate me. Their culture is completely different from ours and how they run their day to day lives. I think that it would be an amazing experience going to school there because you would be forced to go to another country and learn a brand new language, culture, and everything that is completely different. Studying abroad would force me to learn a new culture fast and would be an interesting way to meet new people and learn new things. I believe that going to a new country that is completely different would make me appreciate all different types of people and how different they are. Learning about how people live their day to day lives in their culture always fascinates me and makes me curious. I would love to spend a semester abroad. It would be a life changing experience. -Rachel

  3. If I could travel abroad I would choose to go to Australia. I have thought about spending a semester abroad in my college years ever sense my brothers headed to college. I love to travel and meet new people, so I think this would greatly benefit my character and my education. I would like to travel there my sophomore or junior year of college, because I think that is when I would get the most out of it. Australia would be a great place to spend a semester because I have never heard anything negative about it. Also, I think the fact that Australia is a country that my grandma always wanted to go, but hasn’t had the chance to go to, is what attracts me to it. Sense my major is meteorology, I think it would be a great experience to travel to a different continent in the southern hemisphere where the weather would be different. There is different weather there and different types of animals and environments. I would learn about new cultures and the way people my age live and learn there. I really hope I am able to accomplish this, because I know it would change my life in a positive way.

  4. That's a tough choice for me; I spent Weeks in France as a senior in high school. I would go back there in a heartbeat. I have friends and a host family over there that care for me like I am their biological daughter, so I really can't wait to get back there as soon as possible. As for going to school there, again, I went to school there and would love to go back. I love the French culture, the people, and the food. In high school I dreamed of studying art in Paris. I sit here at a state college writing this, so, you can see how well that worked out.
If I had to choose a place to study that I haven’t already been to I would have to say well anywhere. If you made me pick on I would say some place like England, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, or Italy. I personally love to travel so I will go all of these places eventually. As a general rule I love experiencing new cultures, if I were to go to school outside of the US I would want a place that spoke English just so that the language barrier would not get in the way of my experiencing the world around me.

  5. If I went to another country to study abroad I would definitely go to Rome, I always have wanted to go just to see the historic sites and just to say I have been there. I’m sure you could learn so much more about a place if you actually went to it that trying to learn about it from the other side of the world, if you could get up close to the coliseum or any of the museums it would just be amazing. There would be no comparison to being in a new place and learning new things, it would be like your first day of school all over again. I have always loved to travel; I have been all the way up and down the east coast even up into Canada on multiple occasions. Seeing new things just gives off such a good feeling and being able to go to another country where nothing is the same would be a completely new feeling.

  6. If I could go anywhere in the world my default answer would be Italy because I have always wanted to travel there. If I were going to go somewhere to study abroad, I would probably choose China. To see a culture that is completely different than ours and walk through all of the crowded streets of Beijing, you wouldn’t even need to talk to anyone to learn so much. Plus, I have always wanted to see the Great Wall of China ever since I wrote a research paper on it in sixth grade.
If I could study abroad, I wouldn’t want to stay in one place. I would take a year and travel through lots of countries: Italy, England, China, Australia, places in Africa, etc. You may become more knowledgeable by going and spending sometime in another country, but imagine how much more you would know and experience if you went to more than one location.

  7. If any place in the world i could go to, to study abroad i would say Spain. I have always wanted to go there because i have always been interested in going to see what it is like. I'm Madrid fan for soccer and i would love to be able to go and watch a real game of soccer. With being there on a study abroad program i think it would be really cool. One of my parents friends actually went over there a couple of years ago and she loved it and said it was the best time of her life, but she also learned a lot about the culture and she learned more Spanish. I took Spanish in high school and i still retained most of the stuff i learned but i would love to go to place where english is not very present and i will have to use their language more then what i am accustomed to.
